📞 Dealing With Creditors Without Losing Your Cool
Creditors can be a pain in the neck. And they know exactly how to push your buttons.
Why? Because when you get emotional—angry, scared, guilty—they’re more likely to get paid before your mortgage or light bill.
Don’t fall for it. Stay calm. Stay in control.
If a call gets heated, end it politely and tell them to call back when they can speak to you respectfully.
🛑 Know Your Rights: The FDCPA
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that protects you from abusive or unfair collection practices. Here's what it says:
-
Collectors must call between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. (your local time).
-
They can’t call more than once every two weeks.
-
They can’t harass, insult, or intimidate you. If they do, tell them they need to follow the FDCPA compliance.
-
You can stop workplace calls by sending a certified letter (return receipt requested) asking them to stop.
-
In extreme cases, send a cease-and-desist letter asking them to stop all contact except to notify you of legal action.
-
Collectors cannot garnish your wages or take your bank account unless they first sue you and win. (Student loans in default are the exception.)
đź’ˇ Want to Get Creditors Off Your Back?
The best way to shut down collectors for good is to get on a plan, take control of your money, and pay off your debt—on your terms.
