Here’s what you have to do to close your credit card accounts.
- Cut up the card. Only use cash or your debit card to buy things you can afford.
- Pay off your card balance. Before you can close your credit card account, you’ve got to get that balance to zero.
- Call the credit card company and tell them you are calling to close your account. Ask them to close the account to make sure there are no further charges (cease activity).
- Don’t wait for them to send you written verification that the account is closed. Be proactive and send them a letter; certified mail, return receipt requested, asking for the verification which should be “zero balance, paid in full, closed by consumer and no further recourse will be sought”.
